What are we studying?

YEAR 7

Year 7 Art and Design will be delivered as a 10-week intensive program on a carousel rotation involving three other subject areas.

Grecian VaseTERM 1 and 2

In order to develop student’s knowledge and skill set in Art and Design, they will follow a structured learning programme focused around the theme of flowers in art throughout time. At the core of the unit is the developmental knowledge and appreciation of art history. Students will learn about pottery design from the Classical through to the Renaissance period. This knowledge will be used in order to develop their own floral pattern design.

TERM 3 and 4

Terracotta urnStudents will learn about pottery design from the Classical period through to the Renaissance period. This knowledge will inform their own creative outcomes in the form of decorative clay coil pots. Throughout the course, students will develop their drawing skills through observational studies of flowers using expressive drawing technique.

TERM 5 and 6

flower paintingIn order to develop student’s knowledge and skill set in Art and Design, they will follow a structured learning programme focused around the theme of flowers in art throughout time. At the core of the unit is the developmental knowledge and appreciation of art history. Students will have the opportunity to study contemporary Fine Art with a floral theme in order to inspire their own mixed media paintings.

YEAR 8

Year 8 Art and Design will be delivered as a 10-week intensive program on a carousel rotation involving three other subject areas.

Bodleian LibraryTerm 1 and 2

The Art program will focus on the study of architectural design from ancient times to present day. Students will learn the key characteristics of period style, including studying architecture in the surrounding area. This knowledge will then be applied in order to analyse and respond to Fine Art with an architectural theme. Students will develop their skills and application in a range of art techniques such as drawing and painting.

TERM 3 and 4

Banbury Market PlaceThe Art program will focus on the study of architectural design from ancient times to present day. This knowledge will then be applied in order to analyse and respond to Fine Art printmaking with an architectural theme. Students will develop their skills and application in a range of art techniques such as drawing and printmaking in their response to the artwork studied.

The Art program will focus on the study of architectural design from ancient times to present day. Students will consolidate their skills and application acquired throughout the year in a final outcome in a range of art techniques such as drawing, painting and printmaking.

YEAR 9

TERM 1 and 2

Dali artwork

In terms 1 and 2, students will develop their knowledge of Surrealist artwork including in depth study of the work of Salvador Dali. They will develop their ability to analyse and interpret artwork as well as work successfully in the style of an artist. Drawing and painting skills will be developed with specific focus on achieving control and refinement.

In order to support the scheme of learning and provide enrichment opportunities, students will have an opportunity to visit Compton Verney Art Gallery to experience contemporary artwork as well as work alongside a practising artist.

TERM 3 and 4

Y9 Artwork

During terms 3 and 4, Year 9 will be working on the theme of Portraiture and Identity. They will investigate the ideas and practices of Pop Artists such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein in order to create their own personal artworks. Throughout the unit, students will develop their knowledge and practical application in Photoshop as well as drawing, painting and printmaking.

Students will be encouraged to regularly reflect upon and assess their progress in order to plan for refinement and improvement in their work.

TERM 5 and 6

Y9 artwork

The Year 9 art course will conclude with a unit of work focusing on Street Art. Students will develop a broad knowledge of the genre and explore the wider issues surrounding this art form. The theme for the Street Art will be to raise awareness of environmental issues. Students will explore images of nature in order to create Street Art with an anti litter message.

Within this unit, students will experiment fully with expressive paint techniques as well as fine art printmaking.

YEAR 10

TERM 1 and 2

In order to successfully support students’ transition from Key Stage 3 to GCSE, students will undertake an introductory course in Art and Design for term 1. During this introduction, students will have the opportunity to explore and develop their knowledge and understanding of drawing, painting, printmaking, 3D design and digital art.

In term 2, students will commence working on their personal portfolios. Their portfolios will contain a range of research and practical tasks which meet the four assessment objectives of: artist research, developing ideas through media exploration, recording from first hand and developing personal final pieces. This work will become increasingly ambitious as the course progresses and students will be encouraged to work with independence.

TERM 3 and 4

Y10 Artwork

In terms 3 and 4, Year 10 will commence the second personal portfolio unit. They will develop their ability to work increasingly independently in order to create personal and refined artwork.

Their portfolios will contain a range of research and practical tasks which meet the four assessment objectives of: artist research, developing ideas through media exploration, recording from first hand and developing personal final pieces.

TERM 5 and 6

In terms 5 and 6, Year 10 will commence a more extended unit for the personal portfolio. They will be encouraged to select individual themes and work independently.

Their portfolios will contain a range of research and practical tasks which meet the four assessment objectives of: artist research, developing ideas through media exploration, recording from first hand and developing personal final pieces.

YEAR 11

TERM 1 and 2

In terms 1 and 2, students will consolidate the completion of the personal portfolio which constitutes the coursework element of the GCSE. The personal portfolio will contain a range of work completed throughout Year 10 combined with work completed for this final unit.

The personal portfolio represents 60% of the final GCSE grade. The work will fulfil the four assessment objectives of: artist research, developing ideas through media exploration, recording from first hand as well as developing personal final pieces.

TERM 3 and 4

Y11 Artwork

During terms 3 and 4, Year 11 will commence the Externally Set Assignment (ESA) which is the examination element of the course worth 40% of the final GCSE. The examination board will issue a detailed examination paper which will contain a range of research ideas for a set theme. Students will be asked to complete thorough preparation tasks for the ESA covering the assessment objectives of: artist research, developing ideas through media exploration and recording from first hand.

The ESA will conclude in a 10 hour examination where students will complete a final outcome connected to their preparation studies.

TERM 5 and 6

During terms 4 and 5, students commenced the Externally Set Assignment (ESA) which is set by the examination board. For this assignment, students have completed in-depth research and practical preparations  including: artist research, developing ideas through media exploration and recording from first hand.

At the beginning of term 5, the ESA will conclude in a 10-hour practical examination where students will complete a final outcome connected to their preparation studies.
